GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL TO ASSIGN A NAME TO A PLACE OR ALTER AN EXISTING NAME (INCLUDING THE ALTERATION OF SUBURB AND LOCALITY BOUNDARIES)

The Surveyor-General is responsible for investigating naming proposals and making recommendations to the Minister.

Proposals to assign a new name or alter an existing name must be forwarded in writing to the Surveyor-General through the Geographical Names Unit.

When preparing a proposal, consideration must be given to the Geographical Names Guidelines. Proposals not meeting these guidelines generally will be unsuccessful.

Proposals should contain:

  • The name, address and contact number and e-mail address (if available) of the person making the submission.
  • A detailed submission providing justification for the proposal.
  • A map or plan showing the location and /or extent of the proposal.
  • An indication of the level of community support for the proposal and how this support was determined.
  • The views of the Council or local authority if not in a council area
  • Any comments from affected individuals, agencies or interest groups.
