The State Gazetteer is a database of place names in South Australia. The general aim of the database is to provide a record of any place name that is, or has been used, in South Australia. Associated with each name is up to 38 fields of information relating to feature type, classification, location, derivation and cross-reference to current, previous and alternative names. The purpose of the State Gazetteer is to provide an accurate and definitive listing of place names for mapping, emergency services and general enquiry purposes.

PlaceNames Online provides a simple search tool for obtaining useful information from the State Gazetteer.

The PlaceNames Online website  - http://www.placenames.sa.gov.au - has recently been upgraded. The Gazetteer information will now be up to date and align with the standards for place names in South Australia.

The results of a search of PlaceNames Online will include:

  • General information - eg: classification, feature type
  • Locality information - eg: hundred and council names
  • Geographic information - eg: latitude, longitude, map coordinates
  • Name information - eg: named by, date named
  • Other information - eg: references to documents

The Property Location Browser is a map based web application that also provides searching and display of place names. Select the Place Names (Gazetteer) layer.
